Winter Squalls & a taste of summer
I was sitting in Pisselino and looked uptown on 7th Avenue and suddenly the whole sky and street were darkened by the snow squalls that we’d been alerted about earlier. It came down upon the city like a blanket and for a few minutes it was a swirl of snow. The man sitting across from me ran outside and filmed himself dancing in the snow - very funny sight. Don’t think I didn’t think to do that but I figured one dancing cafe goer was enough! I crossed the street to Via Carota to meet up with my friends and got a back corner “waiting “ table. The hostess seemed overly stressed and was actually not incredibly helpful. When I asked if I could just put my name in for my friends she said I would get the next table if they got there in time but that she wouldn’t take my name. She almost ruined my good vibes for one of my favorite NYC spots. Thankfully, a server came over quickly and took my order for my beloved Venetian summer drink, a sbagliato. Think summer in a glass. Sbagliato means mistake in Italian. It’s a Negroni with prosecco instead of gin - a happy mistake! This recipe from Bon Appetit calls for lime but I like it with orange, the way Via Carota serves it! I think any citrus will do, actually. It’s just a matter of taste!
4 ounces dry Prosecco or other sparkling white wine
1 ounce sweet vermouth
½ ounce Campari
Club soda
Lime wheel (for serving)
